The public is invited to gather at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts to hear from Taiyon Coleman, Mary Kay Rummel, and Kate Shuknecht. These events are curated by local literary professional Dara Syrkin and are free and open to the public. Refreshments are served and a time to socialize after the reading make these fun and engaging events.

Taiyon Coleman holds an MFA in poetry and a Ph.D. in literature from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Taiyon's creative work has appeared in Ethos, Knotgrass, Sketch, Cave Canem anthologies, DrumVoices Revue, Sauti Mpya, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, Maverick Magazine #9, Gathering Ground, The Ringing Ear, Riding Shotgun: Women Writing about Their Mothers, and in Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota. In 2014, Coleman presented Mapping Our Potential: a Poem as a Spatial and Temporal Mapping of Human Experience, a TEDx talk for the University of Minnesota. Coleman was a featured poet for the Cave Canem Reading for the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) conference spring 2015. Taiyon Coleman is a lecturer in the African American and African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Mary Kay Rummel has been appointed the first poet laureate of Ventura County, California. Her seventh book of poetry, The Lifeline Trembles, won the 2014 Blue Light Book Prize and was recently published by Blue Light Press of San Francisco, which also published her book, What’s Left Is The Singing. Recent journal and anthology publications include: Nimrod, The Whirlwind Review, Pirene’s Fountain, Askew, Persimmon Tree, FictionWeek, Miramar, Creativity and Constraint (Wising Up Press), The Heart of All That Is: Reflections on Home (Holy Cow! Press) and Woman in Metaphor (inspired by the paintings of Stephen Linsteadt). Retired from the University of Minnesota, she teaches part time at California State University, Channel Islands, dividing her time between the two places.

Kate Shuknecht is a poet, book artist, editor, publisher, and founding member of broadcraft press. Beyond shaping words from brain to page to performance, she's interested in pushing literature into other visual and tactile dimensions, creating lasting artifacts. Originally from Western New York, she received her MFA from Hamline University and considers herself quite lucky to be amidst the Twin Cities' vibrant creative community.

The Reading Series events are presented in partnership with the Anoka County Library.

Danny and Sandy fall for each other during a carefree summer fling. But when the school year begins, Danny is torn between his feelings for good-girl Sandy and his image with the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. This simple and well-known plot is set against the backdrop of 1959, a pivotal moment in American history, when rock and roll was in its infancy and everything in American culture was about to be turned upside down.

At it’s heart, Grease is an unconventional and rebellious musical about America’s tumultuous crossing over from the 1950’s to the 1960’s — all fueled by cars, drive-in movies, and, more than anything, rock and roll.

The annual Midtown Global Music Festival will be back and better than ever this summer on Saturday, July 18 from 12-8 p.m.!

The festival will feature three stages and performers as varied as Midtown’s cultural makeup. The day will begin with Michael Johnson, an American Pop, Country and folk singer inside and opening drumming ceremony from the Division of Indian Works outside. From there, performances will include Aztec dance troupe Kalpulli Ketzalcoatlicue, Middle Eastern dance and belly-dancing lessons from Jawaahir Dance Company, jazz duo Charmin Michelle and Joel Shapira, a traditional Lion Dance from the Hong De Lion Dancers, Guzheng performance by Lauren Moy, Joey Ryan and the Inks pop band featured at Best of the Twin Cities, a salsa dance class led by Rene Thompson and, to cap off the evening and put those moves to use, a big-band salsa party with Q-Band.

In addition to these on-stage performances, the music festival will offer interactive sessions with the Backyard Initiative CHAT groups, activities and crafts for kids and, of course, access to its more than 40 multicultural shops and restaurants.

More than 9,000 people attended last year’s festival and this year promises to be even better. With such a diverse collection of performers and an even more varied audience, Midtown Global Market is truly offering its visitors an opportunity to see where cultures meet in Minneapolis.

Sponsors of the 2015 Midtown Global Music Festival include Allina Health, along with the Minneapolis Aquatennial, Neighborhood Development Center, Cultural Wellness Center, US Bank, Backyard Initiative CHAT, Midtown Business Association, Division of Indian Work and Ryan Companies. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
