Twin Cities Gateway Events

The Twin Cities Gateway offers a full schedule of events year ‘round. From our nine communities’ signature events (listed at left) to sporting events and large expositions at the National Sports Center in Blaine and live theater at the Lyric Arts Center in Anoka, our calendar of events is loaded with fun events for the whole family.

Gathering Water & Light is an exhibition of the layered photography work of Jes Lee and the "Remote Series" by Ellen Skoro which explores figurative photos set in the cabin and lake culture of Minnesota. Together these artists use the photography medium to expand your understanding and experience of place and landscape.

On view June 25 to July 23, 2016. Opening Reception is June 24, 6 to 8 pm.

The gallery is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is always free.

Don't miss this fun family tradition! The Coon Rapids Fourth of July Community Celebration is coming up July 2-4 at Boulevard Park, on the grounds of the Coon Rapids Ice Center located at 11000 Crooked Lake Boulevard. NEW this year: the “Firecracker 5K” and craft show! You also won't want to miss the parade, carnival games, rides, live music, bingo, pull tabs, car show, food and drinks and some of the best reworks in the Twin Cities!

This event is sponsored by the North Star Lions Club, the Coon Rapids Fire Social Group and the Coon Rapids Community Strength Foundation.

Parade Information

The parade will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2. The parade route will begin at 111th Avenue and Mississippi Boulevard, travel down Mississippi Boulevard to Direct River Drive, travel along Direct River Drive until turning on Flora Street where the parade will then end back near the Coon Rapids Ice Center grounds on 109th Lane (see map at left). Parking will not be allowed in the parade route area or other streets near the parade route from 2-6 p.m. Watch for posted signs.

Parade and Event Parking

Public parking is available in the parking lots at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Other nearby businesses may offer their parking lots for additional public parking as well (either free or for a fee). No parking areas will be well-marked with signage.

Fireworks Information

Expect an even bigger and better show this year, with many aerial reworks July 4! The reworks launch site itself is located across the street from Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

Slabtown, located on the north side of the Rum River roughly between the rail road tracks and Main Street, became home to many of the city’s lumber workers in the late 1800s. This year’s 13th Annual Heritage Home and Garden Tour will feature Slabtown, along with other historic neighborhoods. The tour will give all who attend a chance to explore beautiful homes and gardens throughout Anoka, learn about the historic neighborhood of which they are a part, and see the streets and houses around Anoka in a different light.

All participants receive a tour booklet that acts as your ticket. The tour booklet contains a map and addresses for the tour.

The audience is greeted by the narrator, Man in Chair, sitting on a darkened stage. He is a fan of vintage musicals who seems to be depressed. He quickly decides to cheer things up by playing a record of the original cast recording of a fictional Broadway musical. No sooner does the needle touch the record than we are transported to a 1928 Broadway theater and into “The Drowsy Chaperone”, a musical within a comedy crammed full of every cliché, gag and gimmick from the golden age of musicals.

Public Reception Saturday, July 30, 6-9:00 p.m.

Celebrating the lore of the hauntings of the Banfill-Locke building, this open call exhibition features more than 100 works of art by 67 artists from 15 states and two Canadian provinces. The exhibition was juried by Darkness Dave and Tim Dennis of Darkness Radio (1130am and syndicated to be heard around the world), and four established artists who work with paranormal themes. Stop in to see this diverse show featuring Bigfoot, zombies, ghosts, UFOs, creepy-crawlies, and more!

Extended Hours Throughout the run of the exhibition. Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Also open late on Fridays during the run of the show: 4-8:30 p.m.

What Exactly is Paranormal Art?

Tuesday, August 16, 7:00 p.m. Join Banfill-Locke Executive Director as she hosts a panel of artists featured in the exhibition as they discuss what paranormal art is, how to find source material to inspire, and the challenges of representing the unseen. Free and open to the public.

Paranormal Writing Workshop

On August 19 and 26 from 6:30-9:00 p.m., we are offering a special writing workshop with writer Jessica Freeburg, author, founder of Ghost Stories, Inc. and former paranormal news correspondent for the paranormal radio program, Darkness Radio. Join Jessica as she takes you through the use of paranormal to inspire your story. Use the Art of Darkness gallery show to flesh out your ideas, take a trip through the Banfill Tavern and feel the energy. Take what you’ve gleaned and write your tale. The second week, gather to share and discuss your stories in Manomin Park. Tuition: $40/ $35 BLCA members

Banfill-Locke Paranormal Investigation

On Saturday, August 20 from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., you can explore the mysterious sounds and sights that are common in the Banfill Tavern building. Led by investigators, the Twin Cities Paranormal Society invites you to learn from their expertise and share their equipment. Participation is limited and the experience costs $50 per person.
