Homes and Education
The rolling hills, valleys, lakes and streams have become the perfect backdrop for the housing boom experienced in the MetroNorth communities. Here you will find a unique blend of urban amenities in a friendly, small-town atmosphere, where neighbors still know each other.
With award-winning schools, major hospitals, world class recreational facilities, and post-secondary education institutions, it's easy to see why so many people are choosing to live and work in MetroNorth communities such as Coon Rapids.
Minnesota has the nation's second-highest graduation rate, and nearly two-thirds of the graduates are going on to college. Schools are focusing their efforts on preparing students with high-tech computer skills and knowledge regarding a global economy.
Business and Industry
The area's first industry was logging. After building a dam on the Rum River in 1853, pioneers established sawmills, flour mills and factories. Today, approximately 15,000 acres of rich peat soil produce a variety of vegetables and more sod than any other county in the nation. The products are sold throughout the U.S. and Canada with an estimated value of $30 million per year for the area's economy. However, the single biggest contributor to Anoka County's economy is manufacturing.
Some of the largest employers include Anoka Hennepin ISD #11, Medtronic, Inc., Hoffman Engineering Company, Onan Corporation, Anoka County and Mercy/Unity Medical Centers.
Leisure Time
The MetroNorth area boasts four regional parks which offer horseback riding, camping and picnicking. Families enjoy the four-foot waves at the area's wave pool located at Bunker Hills Regional Park. If golfing is on your agenda, be sure to check out one or more of the eight courses located in the MetroNorth, including our premiere City golf course, Bunker Hills.
