Ham Lake
Travel to Ham Lake, home of the Annual Snowbowl, Majestic Oaks Golf Club and more! The City of Ham Lake has a rich history of development. Originally settled by the Scottish, the area’s first name meant “beautiful valley”, but because of a cultural shift, the Scandinavian settlers looked at the lake that dominates its landscape and named the town as a tribute to the lake shaped like a ham. Today Ham Lake continues to carry its lineage and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The Scottish heritage in Ham Lake still exists in the sport of golf. The Majestic Oaks championship golf course is one of the largest and one of the most highly regarded championship courses in the metropolitan area. The course blends a natural setting with two beautifully groomed 18-hole courses. Paired with an executive nine and a full-service pro shop, Majestic Oaks is a perfect place for golfers of all levels to enjoy.
Do you like golf without clubs? Ham Lake Park, encompassing 90 acres and located on the banks of Ham Lake, includes a unique 18-hole Disc Golf Course. Disc golf players of all levels can play the scenic course free of charge, and then relax with a picnic lunch, view nature along the pathways or fish from the large pier.
Golf isn’t just limited to the warmer months, but goes well into winter in Ham Lake. The residents of this community capitalize on the chilly and snowy winter season by creating a twist on the traditional game of golf. Snow golf, along with dog sled races and skijoring competitions have become a popular form of recreation in this newly created annual event of the Snowbowl.
Summertime is when a boom of travelers visits the area to camp on the rustic shores of Ham Lake. These summer visitors are hosted by the owners of the Ham lake Campground, one out of a handful of campgrounds in the metropolitan area. This facility stands out with its assortment of recreational activities, boat rentals and themed weekends throughout their season. Pick a place to sleep to sleep underneath the stars from their variety of tent or recreational vehicle sites or rent their newest addition, a cabin that sleeps six. The cabin was constructed to help keep up with the demand during the summer when sports teams flood into the area.
Numerous sports teams call Ham Lake their temporary home away from home while competing at the National Sports Center campus in Blaine. With the city’s close vicinity to this world-class sports complex, including the Schwan Super Rink, Victory Links, 52+ multi-purpose fields and Sports Hall, many of the city’s amenities can be enjoyed in between the times of competition.
