New Brighton experienced a burst of growth from 1960 to 1970, when the population grew from 6,500 to 19,500. Today, New Brighton is a stable community with a well diversified and maintained housing stock. The City is served by two school districts: Independent School District 282 located in St. Anthony with an enrollment of approximately 1,500 students, and Independent School District 621 located in Shoreview with an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. ISD 621 recently completed an $89 million renovation of its elementary, middle, and high schools to ensure quality educational facilities into the future. The City of New Brighton enjoys a positive relationship with the local school districts. New Brighton maintains 13 neighborhood parks and open space totaling 160 acres, reinforcing its commitment to providing recreational and wellness opportunities.
The City has a long standing forestry program that creates and maintains a beautiful urban forest that volunteers assist with.
The Family Service Center, a focal point of the City, offers recreational, cultural, educational, and wellness programs. The Center includes the Eagles Nest--one of the largest indoor playgrounds in the Twin Cities, a full size gym, indoor track and fitness center, meeting rooms, and banquet facilities. The City has a safe and well-maintained infrastructure, because of a street rehabilitation program that provides for the reconstruction of over 2 miles of streets annually on a neighborhood basis.
Citizens are actively involved in New Brighton having opportunities to serve on five municipal commissions, the festival committee, and ten local active clubs and organizations.
