Family in Town? Your Holiday Survival Guide to the Twin Cities Gateway

The halls are decked, the guest beds have fresh sheets, and the fridge is stocked to bursting. Then, the doorbell rings. The family has arrived for the holidays!

Hosting relatives over the winter break is equal parts heartwarming and stressful. You love them, but suddenly you have a house full of varying ages, energy levels, and interests and everyone is looking at you and asking, “So, what are we doing today?”

If you live in the Twin Cities Gateway area, those wonderful communities just north of Minneapolis and Saint Paul like Anoka, Blaine, Coon Rapids, Fridley, and Shoreview, you have a secret weapon. You are perfectly positioned. You have easy access to the big city excitement without the parking nightmares, combined with incredible local amenities right in your backyard.

Here is your guide to keeping everyone entertained, festive, and sane in the Twin Cities Gateway this holiday season.

Burn Off the Holiday Energy

When the kids (and the adults) have had a bit too much cocoa and screen time, it’s time to get everyone moving.

  • Winter Wonderland at Bunker Hills: Bunker Hills Regional Park in Coon Rapids is a local treasure. Whether there is fresh powder for cross-country skiing or you just need a crisp winter hike through the towering oaks, the miles of trails offer a perfect reset for the whole group.

  • The Ballpark (Blaine): If you want some friendly competition, head to The Ballpark. Their HitTrax simulators let you “play” in professional stadiums, making it a blast for kids and adults alike. Plus, their self-pour beer wall and great food keep the energy high.

  • On The Green (Blaine): For the golf enthusiasts in the family, On The Green offers world-class simulators in a cozy, climate-controlled environment. It’s a great way to hit the links even when there’s a foot of snow on the ground outside.

  • Lace Up the Skates: There is nothing more “Minnesota” than an afternoon at the rink. Our Gateway communities maintain excellent local ice rinks, many featuring warming houses to keep the toes toasty. It’s a budget-friendly way to get the cousins together for some fresh air and exercise.

Get Into the Holiday Spirit

  • Historic Anoka Charm: Downtown Anoka feels like a scene from a holiday movie this time of year. The historic storefronts are beautifully decorated, making it the perfect spot for a family stroll. You can do some last-minute gift shopping and then duck into a local café for a warm drink.

  • The Gateway as Your Basecamp: One of the best parts of staying in the Gateway is our proximity to the region’s biggest light shows. You can easily head out to see major displays like the GLOW Holiday Festival and be back to the comfort of home in no time, avoiding the long commutes.  If you’d like to stay closer to the Gateway, check out the Holiday Lights Tour Map HERE!

A Toast to the Season

Sometimes the grown-ups need a little “adult time” away from the toy assembly and cartoon marathons.

  • Forgotten Star Brewing Co. (Fridley): This is a “must-show” for any out-of-town guest. Housed in a stunningly restored WWII-era building, the architecture is as impressive as the craft beer. It’s a great place to sit by the fire and catch up.

  • Invictus Brewing Co. (Blaine): Located right next to the National Sports Center, Invictus offers a spacious, bright taproom that is great for larger groups. Their partnership with the adjacent Tipsy Steer means you have fantastic food options to go with your flight.

Gather Around the Table

Eventually, everyone will grow tired of turkey leftovers. The Gateway has incredible dining options that are perfect for hosting a crowd:

In Blaine, you can’t go wrong with Oliver’s for a sophisticated but approachable meal, or The Tavern Grill, which is famous for its “Build Your Own” burgers, pizzas, and salads—perfect for picky eaters.

If you’re in Mounds View, check out Moe’s American Grill for a lively sports-bar atmosphere and great wings. For those looking for legendary portions of American comfort food, RJ Riches is a local staple that never disappoints.

In Shoreview, Oliver’s is a fantastic choice for a sophisticated but approachable meal with a great atmosphere. For a classic favorite that handles big families with ease, the Green Mill in Shoreview is always a reliable and festive option.

A Final Tip for the Host

Remember, your family is here to see you. Don’t feel pressured to fill every single hour with a scheduled activity. Some of the best memories are made just relaxing in the living room. But when “cabin fever” strikes, you can rest easy knowing the best of the Twin Cities is right in your own backyard.
