Itinerary: Couple or Best Friend Weekend Getaway in the Fall

Autumn is one of the best times to explore the Twin Cities Gateway region. Whether planning a much-needed couples retreat or a best friend weekend trip, there is so much in store for those looking to get to the most out of the season.

Hike

Lace up your hiking boots and pack a snack—the Twin Cities Gateway region’s many hiking trails are a must for any fall getaway. Located in Fridley, Islands of Peace County Park features a paved pathway and views of the Mississippi River accompanied by maple-basswood trees. If wanting something a bit lengthier, try the 6.5-mile Rice Creek North Regional Trail, which connects the cities of Lino Lakes, Circle Pines, and Blaine.

Paddle

The Gateway region boasts an abundance of lakes, rivers and streams perfect for a tranquil kayak or canoe adventure that will feature stunning views of the fall foliage. The Rice Creek Water Trail extends 15 miles, starting in Lino Lakes and ending in Long Lake in New Brighton. Passing by several other lakes featuring boat launches and parks, paddlers will find it easy to start at any point on the Rice Creek Water Trail. Snail Lake in Shoreview is not only great for kayaking and canoeing, but paddleboarding, too, and it is just the right size that paddlers can see the entirety of the lake in just a couple hours.

Do

Fall brings a plethora of fun, seasonal experiences to the Gateway region. Waldoch Farm in Lino Lakes features a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and a garden center with a selection of fall décor for sale. Ham Lake’s Anoka County Farms also boasts a pumpkin patch.

Drink

What’s a getaway without a wine tasting? Ham Lake’s Willow Tree Vineyard & Winery only sells its wines on-site at the family-owned farm. The tasting room includes both indoor and outdoor seating. Of course, fall is the perfect time to enjoy brews like red and brown ales, porters, and stouts. Alloy Brewing in Coon Rapids, 10k Brewing in Anoka, and Invictus Brewing Co. in Blaine are all great options if you’re looking for a craft beer to warm the insides.

Relax

Wind down and kick your feet up with a massage or spa treatment. The Salon + Spa Co. is Anoka’s premier spa experience, with facials, sinus treatments, massages, and more. Minnesota-based Simonson’s Salon & Spa has a location in Coon Rapids and offers several treatments and services, including aromatherapy.

Stay

After a full day of sights, good eats and fun, find respite at one the region’s comfortable B&Bs or hotels. Ticknor Hill Bed & Breakfast in Anoka was built in 1867 and adorns Victorian décor and charm throughout. Enjoy cozying up to the fireplace in the library before heading to your well-decorated room. Located in Fridley, LivINN Hotel Minneapolis North/Fridley features spacious rooms—including jacuzzi suites—as well as a fitness center and an indoor open atrium.
